Cuban Informal Currency Market Sees Dollar Stability, Euro Slight Decline
The informal currency market in Cuba experienced a relatively calm trading day on September 1, 2026. The U.S. dollar closed at 678 Cuban pesos (CUP), remaining unchanged from the previous day and maintaining its level since today's opening. This marks a 10-peso increase over the past week, representing a 1.5% rise compared to seven days ago.
The euro, however, showed a slight decline, closing at 768 CUP, down by 1.5 pesos from the previous day but still up by 12.5 pesos (a 1.7% increase) over the past week. Its monthly balance reflects a loss of 20 pesos compared to 30 days ago.
The MLC, or digital currency, closed at 462 CUP, though this figure is limited due to restricted data availability. It has dropped by 17.5 pesos (3.7%) from the previous day and 10 pesos over the past week. Over the last 30 days, it has fluctuated between a low of 408 CUP and a high of 529 CUP.
The Central Bank of Cuba's official exchange rate remains well below the values observed in everyday practice, failing to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population. The official dollar is at 636 CUP per dollar and 739 CUP per euro, a trend that does not bridge the gap with the parallel market.
