Cuba's Informal Currency Market Holds Steady Amid Ongoing Economic Challenges
The informal currency market in Cuba has shown stability on August 1, with minimal fluctuations in exchange rates. The U.S. dollar and euro remain unchanged from the previous session at 673 Cuban pesos (CUP) and 785 CUP respectively. However, the MLC, a digital currency, shows a slight decline of three pesos to 472 CUP.
The official exchange rate from the Central Bank of Cuba is significantly lower than the informal market rates, with a difference of 58 pesos for the dollar and 78 pesos for the euro. This discrepancy reflects the ongoing inflation and low state salaries in Cuba, as well as the increasing partial dollarization of the economy.
The MLC's indicative value is limited by its restricted circulation compared to cash currencies like the dollar and euro. The use of digital currency in Cuba is primarily confined to state-run stores that accept it, further limiting its influence on the overall market.
