Cuba's Informal Currency Market Sees Dollar Rise Amid Peso Devaluation
The informal currency market in Cuba has seen changes in exchange rates for major currencies on August 30, 2026. The U.S. dollar has increased by one peso to an average of 675 Cuban pesos (CUP) per dollar, with buying at 670 CUP and selling at 680 CUP. This marks a noticeable rise from the previous day's closing rate of 674 CUP.
The euro remains stable at an average of 763 CUP, with buying at 755 CUP and selling at 770 CUP. However, it has shown a weekly increase, rising by 12.5 pesos or 1.7% this week compared to the same period last week.
The freely convertible currency (MLC) starts Sunday with an indicative average value of 468 CUP, bought at 438 CUP and sold at 498 CUP. It has increased by one peso since the previous session's rate of 467 CUP.
A significant gap exists between the official exchange rates from Cuba's Central Bank (Segment III) and the informal market rates, with a disparity of 41 pesos for the dollar and 28 pesos for the euro. This highlights the disconnect between the official economy and the everyday reality faced by Cubans.
