Danish Central Bank Warns of Stablecoin Risks Amid Global Growth
The Danish central bank has issued a warning about the potential financial risks associated with stablecoin growth. According to Danmarks Nationalbank, the increasing use of stablecoins globally could have an impact on Denmark's payments and financial system.
In its September analysis, the central bank noted that while adoption in Denmark remains low, the global market for stablecoins has seen significant growth. The report highlighted the risks of dollar-denominated stablecoins, which could lead to external financial shocks.
The use of euro-pegged tokens, such as EURR, is becoming more widespread across Europe, including through banks and fintech companies. Revolut has already launched EURR in Denmark, Poland, and Portugal, with plans for further expansion.
Danmarks Nationalbank emphasized the importance of central bank money remaining the primary settlement asset between banks, even as new forms of digital money emerge. The central bank is working with the European Central Bank to ensure that banks can continue to access central bank money in a tokenized financial system.
