DAX Slips as Oil Prices Hold Steady Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The DAX index in Germany slipped on Monday as oil prices remained near recent highs following the expiration of the US-Iran ceasefire. The temporary truce had been in place, but its end has added a 'supply-risk premium' to oil prices, which can impact Europe's energy bills and eventually inflation data.
Danske Bank reported that Brent crude was trading above $88 a barrel as investors digested the ceasefire's end and slow-moving talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This development is significant because even if oil flows continue uninterrupted, the risk of disruption can add to prices, which then feeds into Europe's energy costs.
On the other hand, company-specific headlines around RWE and Deutsche Telekom kept traders focused on individual stocks. RWE edged higher after Deutsche Bank Research pointed to a strong results call and suggested the company's longer-term guidance might prove conservative.
Deutsche Telekom also made news by agreeing to buy Polish fiber network operator Fiberhost and broadband and TV provider Inea for an enterprise value of €1 billion from Macquarie Asset Management. This deal is expected to impact markets, particularly with Wednesday's euro-area July inflation reading on the horizon.
