Deutsche Bank Tapped to Boost Yuan Trade in Europe
Deutsche Bank's appointment as Europe's first non-Chinese renminbi clearing house has underscored the growing use of the yuan in global trade, according to Konrad Haunit, head of multinational corporate coverage for Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa. The shift towards the yuan is driven by evolving business models and supply chains, Haunit said.
The appointment gives Deutsche Bank direct clearing and settlement capability for cross-border yuan transactions in Frankfurt, adding to its existing offshore yuan operations in Hong Kong, Singapore, and London. Haunit described the move as 'hugely important' for the bank, supporting the long-term growth of the offshore yuan ecosystem.
However, Haunit urged caution when asked if the yuan could broadly replace the US dollar, noting that supplanting the dollar is not necessarily a goal of Beijing's. The appointment comes after the People's Bank of China named Deutsche Bank as Europe's first foreign yuan clearing bank last month.
