Dissent Grows as Fed Keeps Rates Steady, But Rate Hike Looms
The Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady at its latest meeting, but dissent among policymakers grew as three officials voted to hike rates by a quarter point. This comes after Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan, Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, and Minneapolis' Neel Kashkari expressed concerns about persistent inflation, which could lead to higher rates.
Despite this, the committee voted 9-3 in favor of keeping rates between 3.5% and 3.75%. This decision was seen as a respite for markets, particularly tech stocks, but experts warn that ordinary Americans should prepare for a potential rate hike soon.
The odds of a quarter-point hike at the Fed's September 16 meeting jumped to 72%, up nearly 20% from the previous day. Some officials, including Warsh and Governor Christopher Waller, have called for a focus on lowering inflation, which typically indicates a bias toward raising rates.
