Dollar and Euro Plummet in Cuba's Informal Currency Market
The Cuban informal currency exchange market has seen a downturn in major currencies on Monday, August 10, 2026. The US dollar closed at 670 Cuban pesos (CUP), marking a decrease of 2.5 pesos compared to the previous day when it closed at 673 CUP. This decline comes after a week where the rate remained steady at 673 pesos, indicating a weekly drop of 0.4%. Over the past month, however, the dollar has gained 10 pesos since it was at 660 CUP thirty days ago.
The euro is also down in value, closing at 773 Cuban pesos (CUP) on Monday, August 10, 2026, a drop of 5 pesos from the previous day when it stood at 778 CUP. The euro has fluctuated between a high of 790 and a low of 745 pesos over the past month.
The MLC, which is primarily used in state-run stores that accept it, has seen its value decrease to approximately 423 Cuban pesos (CUP), although this figure should be considered indicative due to limited data availability. The disparity between official and informal exchange rates remains significant, with the Central Bank of Cuba's Segment III rate standing at 621 CUP per dollar and 717 CUP per euro.
