Dollar and Euro Rise in Cuban Informal Market Amid Official Rate Disparity
The informal currency market in Cuba has started the day on September 8, 2026, with the US dollar and euro rising in value. According to CiberCuba's Exchange Rate index, which tracks transactions in Telegram and Facebook groups, the dollar is now trading at an average of 684 Cuban pesos (CUP), up one peso from the previous session.
The increase marks a rise of 0.9% over the past week, with the dollar having fluctuated between a low of 663 CUP and its current high of 684 CUP in the last 30 days. The euro, meanwhile, has gained two pesos to reach an average value of 778 CUP, surpassing the dollar by 94 pesos.
The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) is trading at around 417 CUP on average, but its use is limited due to a lack of physical existence and restricted circulation in state-run businesses. The official exchange rate set by the Central Bank of Cuba remains below that of the informal market, with a gap of 40 pesos for the dollar and 29 pesos for the euro.
The CiberCuba Exchange Rate index is an automated analysis of thousands of currency buy-and-sell posts, excluding atypical offers and spam messages to provide a representative value updated multiple times a day.
