Dollar Debacle: US Safe-Haven Currency Fails to Deliver
The US Dollar's status as a safe-haven currency has been called into question as geopolitical tensions escalate in the Gulf region. Despite rising energy prices and heightened risk aversion, the Greenback has failed to capitalize on its traditional haven status, instead trimming losses from last week's highs.
Analysts point to several factors contributing to the Dollar's weakness, including the US Treasury's plan to buy back long-term securities, which has accelerated USD debasement trade. Additionally, the unwinding of Japanese Yen (JPY) carry trades and rising bets on higher interest rates from major central banks are also weighing on the currency.
Rabobank notes that the Dollar failed to react positively to last week's strong Nonfarm Payrolls report, which boosted hopes for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in September. The team argues that the 'Dollar debasement debate' triggered by US Treasury Secretary Bessent's bond intervention announcement on August 19 has undermined confidence in the greenback.
ING analysts suggest that a fragile USD/JPY is also contributing to the Dollar's malaise, citing positioning for a downside break of 150 over the coming months due to expectations of Japanese policymakers delivering on their side of a grand bargain with Washington.
