Dollar Demand Surges in Asia Amid De-dollarisation Debate
The de-dollarisation debate has been gaining momentum in recent years, with many predicting a decline in the US dollar's dominance as global trade relationships and reserve diversification shift towards alternative currencies.
However, despite these predictions, demand for dollar liquidity in Asia is growing, according to clients of a financial institution in the region. In fact, they are taking a more strategic approach than they did during the low-rate era, managing their dollar liquidity effectively in a global financial system that remains US-centric.
Geopolitics, changes in global trading relationships, volatility, reserve diversification, and alternative payment systems have all contributed to this shift towards de-dollarisation. However, for many institutions in Asia, from insurers to exporters of consumer goods, the question is not whether they need dollar liquidity, it is how effectively they can manage it.
