Dollar Dips on Treasury Buyback Plans and Bond Yield Spikes
The US dollar experienced a significant drop on Friday, reaching a three-month low against the euro. This decline was largely attributed to the US Treasury's strategy of expanding buybacks of longer-dated debt, which aims to mitigate bond yield spikes.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed his intention to further intensify these repurchases, which has raised concerns about the potential pressure on the currency. The 30-year yield soared to heights unseen since 2007, prompting traders to consider several factors contributing to this volatility, including fiscal pessimism, volume of issuance, geopolitical tensions with Iran, and uncertainties regarding the Federal Reserve's trajectory.
Currency strategist Marc Chandler of Bannockburn Global Forex noted that Bessent's yield suppression efforts may not have a positive impact on the dollar. However, global currencies like the euro and sterling witnessed gains, while Bitcoin saw a significant surge as well.
