Dollar Dips to Three-Month Low Amid Treasury Debt Buybacks
The U.S. dollar experienced its lowest value against the euro in three months on Friday as the Treasury's efforts to buy back longer-dated debt hinted at increased pressure on the currency.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed a desire to intensify these repurchases, which aim to reduce bond yield spikes. The 30-year yield soared to levels unseen since 2007, prompting traders to name several factors for concern, including fiscal pessimism and geopolitical tensions with Iran.
Currency strategist Marc Chandler of Bannockburn Global Forex noted the futility of Bessent's efforts in aiding the dollar, but global currencies like the euro and sterling saw gains. Additionally, Bitcoin experienced a significant surge.
