Dollar Dominance Endures Amid Global Economic Shifts
The US dollar's dominance in global reserves remains unchallenged, according to recent data from the IMF. Central banks and institutions like SAMA continue to accumulate dollars, with a significant portion of their foreign exchange reserves held in US Treasury securities.
In Q2 2013, the dollar accounted for 62% of allocated reserves, valued at over $6 trillion. The euro came second with a share of around 24%, while the pound sterling and Japanese yen trailed behind. This trend has been consistent since 2002, despite various economic challenges.
The dollar's appeal lies in its liquidity and the size of the US economy. Countries like China, which holds over $1 trillion in US Treasury securities, and Saudi Arabia, with net foreign assets valued at $696 billion, continue to invest in dollars due to their substantial external surpluses.
