Dollar Dominance: Inflation Expectations Spark Strong US Currency Rally
The US Dollar Index (DXY) has demonstrated its dominance in the foreign exchange market, marking its best weekly performance in over a month. The resurgence of inflation expectations is driving this surge, with geopolitical tensions in the Middle East causing Brent crude oil prices to skyrocket above $100 per barrel.
The recent escalation of threats to oil transport in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz has triggered concerns about rising prices. As a result, the market has begun to reprice the Federal Reserve's (Fed) monetary policy, with the probability of a 25 basis point rate hike surging from 13% to nearly 38% in just one week.
The technical analysis suggests that the dollar index is in bullish alignment, with short-term moving averages crossing upward and widening the gap with long-term moving averages. This indicates extremely strong short-to-medium-term buying momentum for the US dollar.
The European Central Bank (ECB) has chosen to keep interest rates unchanged at its recent meeting, causing the Euro (EUR) to depreciate accordingly. In contrast, the Japanese Yen against the US dollar has dropped to a 40-year historic low.
