Dollar Dominance on Shaky Ground: Dimon Warns of Consequences of US Decline
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon believes the US dollar's status as the world's reserve currency is at risk if the country fails to maintain its economic and military dominance. The dollar currently accounts for around 57% of global foreign-exchange reserves, down from about 70% in the early 2000s.
Dimon warns that a decline in US strength could lead to a fragmented world economy, posing significant risks to the US. He points out that recent events, such as the freezing of Russian central-bank assets after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, have raised concerns about the impact of financial sanctions on the dollar's status.
Dimon also emphasizes the need for the US to reduce its dependence on potential adversaries for strategically important goods. He cites China as an example, stating that the US should not rely on it for rare earths, aluminum, and other critical materials.
To address these weaknesses, JPMorgan has launched a $1.5 trillion, 10-year Security and Resiliency Initiative to promote domestic production of critical minerals and manufacturing essential to national security.
