Dollar Drops Against Yen as Governments Intervene
The US dollar has dropped against the Japanese yen after governments intervened in currency markets. The intervention came as Japan's currency weakened significantly, causing inflationary pressures on imports and businesses.
According to Reuters, the Japanese Finance Ministry confirmed that it took coordinated action with the U.S. Treasury to maintain the yen and counter excessive currency volatility. As a result, the dollar fell from recent highs around ¥163 to roughly ¥156, marking one of the largest advances for the Japanese currency in months.
Currency traders rushed to cover their short positions against the yen, aiding its advance upward. Analysts said the intervention was a reminder that governments will still act when exchange-rate swings become disruptive. The euro and British pound also benefited from the softer dollar.
The impact of government intervention on markets is expected to be short-term, with underlying interest rate differentials driving currency rates in the long run. Investors are now considering whether further intervention could be a possibility if the yen comes under fresh pressure.
