Dollar Drops Amid Rising Rate Hike Expectations
The US dollar dipped on Monday as traders awaited significant US jobs data due later in the week. This comes after hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, who indicated that the Fed may need to further tighten monetary policy if inflation does not trend down toward 2%. As a result, renewed expectations for a possible rate hike at the Fed's September 15-16 meeting are on the rise.
According to Fed funds futures pricing, the odds of a September rate hike jumped to 64% after Warsh's remarks, up from about 35% previously. This uptick in probability has sparked renewed speculation about a potential rate increase.
The August jobs data is expected to show a gain of 55,000 jobs, following July's report which surprisingly showed a decline in employment. Analysts warn that consecutive declines could make a rate hike less likely.
