Dollar Gains as Oil Prices Soar Amid Middle East Tensions
The US dollar has gained strength as oil prices surge due to Middle East developments and concerns about AI safety.
The attacks on a major Saudi Arabian oil pipeline have removed up to 7 million barrels per day of oil from the market, causing energy prices to skyrocket. The Strait of Hormuz remains mostly closed, adding to the supply chain disruptions.
As a result, government and central bankers are increasingly worried about the impact on consumption. ECB chief economist Lane highlighted this risk over the weekend, while US President Trump promised a $5,000 dividend to ease cost-of-living pressure.
The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its rate-setting decision on Wednesday, with markets pricing in an 88% chance of a 25bps rate hike. However, Fed doves led by New York Fed President Williams and US President Trump are opposing higher rates.
