Dollar Index Flat as Traders Wait for Jackson Hole Guidance
The dollar index was largely flat on Thursday as traders waited for guidance from the Federal Reserve's annual summit at Jackson Hole, while the yen remained relatively stable after Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino indicated that timely rate hikes are necessary.
Himino did not specify how many rate hikes to expect, but emphasized the need for the BOJ to respond to changing monetary conditions in a 'timely and appropriate manner' as inflation targets near their 2 percent goal.
The dollar fell by 0.3 percent on the week after shedding 0.8 percent in the last period, and traders are looking forward to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole, which will provide insight into the direction of US interest rates.
Himino's comments came as a surprise to some investors, who had expected more clarity on the BOJ's monetary policy stance. However, his remarks did not provide any concrete indication of when a rate hike can be expected, keeping markets uncertain about an increase in September.
