Dollar Pressure Builds as Risk Premia Rise

The US Dollar has been facing pressure due to rising risk premia and growing concerns over fiscal deficits. According to Georgette Boele from ABN AMRO, investors are increasingly focused on US debt dynamics and fiscal risks, outweighing the support provided by higher US Treasury yields.

Despite an expanded buyback program announced by the Treasury, which was intended to reassure investors, yields actually fell, causing the Dollar to come under even more pressure across the board. This has benefited the euro, with it likely to continue rising if the Dollar continues its downward trend.

The risk premium appears to be a more important driver of the US Dollar than nominal yields. Since July 1st, the US term premium has been on an upward trend, while the US Dollar has moved lower. This trend suggests that investors are prioritizing debt dynamics and fiscal risks over higher yields.
