Dollar Rallies on Strong Jobs Data, Then Cools Ahead of Inflation Report
The US dollar surged on Friday after data revealed that American employers added 162,000 jobs in August, exceeding economists' expectations of 56,000 additions. This significant gain has boosted bets on a September Federal Reserve interest rate hike.
However, the dollar's initial jump was short-lived as markets headed into a three-day holiday weekend and traders waited for next week's inflation data. The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%, but wages increased 3.1% in the 12 months through August, the lowest since June 2021.
Noel Dixon, senior macro strategist at State Street, stated that 'I don't think this number changes anything really.' He emphasized that next week's inflation reading will be crucial in determining the Fed's decision on interest rates.
