Dollar Retreats Ahead of FOMC Minutes as Yen Gains Strength
The US Dollar (USD) has retreated ahead of the release of the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) July meeting minutes, causing the USD/JPY pair to edge lower. The reduced expectations of a September Fed rate hike have weighed on the US Dollar.
Meanwhile, the Japanese Yen (JPY) has gained strength as traders become cautious about building large bearish positions against it due to concerns over potential foreign-exchange intervention and hawkish Bank of Japan (BoJ) expectations. The pair currently trades around 159.10, down 0.32% on the day.
The recent dovish repricing of Federal Reserve rate expectations has impacted the US Dollar's value. Analysts at MUFG note that markets have continued to price in more BoJ tightening for the next 12 months, which has helped stabilize USDJPY around the 160.00 level and contained further yen depreciation.
However, MUFG cautions that Japan's weaker-than-expected Q2 GDP growth raises questions about how aggressively the BoJ can tighten policy over the coming months, potentially challenging the extent of rate hikes currently being priced in by markets.
