Dollar Rises Amid Informal Currency Market Fluctuations in Cuba
Cuba's informal currency market closed on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, with the US dollar continuing its upward trend. The American currency increased by two pesos to close at 685 Cuban pesos (CUP) for purchase and sale rates of 680 CUP and 690 CUP, respectively.
This marks a 1.1% increase in the dollar's value over the past week, rising from 678 CUP recorded on September 1, 2026. The monthly perspective shows a more significant gain, with the dollar up 12.5 pesos from 673 CUP recorded 30 days ago.
The euro, however, remained stable compared to yesterday, pricing at 778 CUP for purchase and sale rates of 775 CUP and 780 CUP, respectively. The MLC's exchange rate closed at an indicative average value of 462 CUP, with purchase and sale rates at 448 CUP and 475 CUP.
The significant gap between the official and informal exchange rates remains a concern for Cubans, who continue to face structural shortages of foreign currency amidst sustained inflation and low state salaries.
