Dollar Soars as Fed's Warsh Hints at Rate Hike
The US dollar rose to a session high after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh hinted that interest rate hikes may be necessary if inflation doesn't return to the central bank's 2% target.
Warsh made this statement at the Jackson Hole symposium, where he emphasized the importance of controlling inflation. This led to an increase in market expectations for a September rate hike, from about 35% before his speech to around 50%
The dollar index rose by 0.35% to 99.46, its highest level since August 19, while the euro fell 0.34% against the greenback.
Eugene Epstein, head of trading and structured products at Moneycorp, expressed skepticism about Warsh's comments, stating that 'at least for the time being' they seem like 'Warsh-speak', implying a lack of substance in his statements.
