Dollar Soars as Fed's Warsh Signals Hawkish Stance on Inflation
The US dollar rallied on Friday after Federal Reserve chief Kevin Warsh signaled his willingness to prioritize fighting high inflation in a speech at the Jackson Hole symposium. The speech was seen as more hawkish than expected, with short-term US Treasury bonds experiencing higher yields and futures markets raising the odds of a rate hike in September.
Warsh emphasized the importance of moving towards the Fed's 2% inflation target 'clearly and at sufficient speed', adding that 'we have work to do' if underlying inflation isn't meeting this goal. He also expressed his confidence in the US economy, citing strong employment figures.
The dollar jumped against major currencies such as the euro and yen following the speech, with futures markets increasing the likelihood of a rate hike in September. Oil prices experienced mixed signals due to ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 1/5 of global oil passes.
