Dollar Soars Near One-Month High on Hike Odds Jump

The US dollar has maintained its strength near a one-month high as investors increasingly anticipate a Federal Reserve interest-rate hike this week. The odds of such an event have risen to about 38%, up from around 16% a week ago, according to rate-probability tools.

This shift in expectations is largely driven by the gap between US and Japanese interest rates, with short-term US yields looking more attractive than Japan's. As a result, global investors are favoring dollars over yen, engaging in a strategy known as the 'carry trade', where they hold dollars to fund positions in low-yielding yen.

Despite official efforts by the Bank of Japan to talk up the yen, its weakness persists due to the underlying incentive for investors to hold dollars. The Bank is expected to keep rates unchanged, leaving its tone and potential tolerance for higher Japanese yields as key factors influencing the yen's value.
