Dollar Softening Boosts Asian Currencies to Record High
Asian currencies took advantage of the US dollar's softening to strengthen on Thursday. The South Korean won reached a 14-month high, while other emerging markets like Thailand and Indonesia saw their currencies climb.
The easing of the dollar index and lower US Treasury yields contributed to the gains. Investors seemed to be holding out for the monthly nonfarm payrolls report, which could have an impact on interest rates.
Pepperstone noted that the absence of further escalation in US-Iran tensions also played a role in the market's relief. Fuel subsidies and steady electronics exports may provide support to Malaysia, but the country is still vulnerable to higher US yields or renewed geopolitical stress.
