Dollar Strength Ahead: Cautious Markets Anticipate Hawkish FOMC
The US dollar may gain strength ahead of the Federal Reserve's FOMC meeting on Wednesday due to cautious market positioning. Chair Kevin Warsh's opposition to forward guidance could encourage markets to hold dollars as a safety net against potential hawkish surprises.
Oil prices have fallen sharply, with Brent crude trading at $92 per barrel, but downside risks remain unless a clear de-escalation path emerges in the Middle East conflict. The dollar has gained momentum ahead of the FOMC meeting, and markets are pricing in an 8bp rate hike for this meeting and 41bp by year-end.
The European Central Bank's (ECB) monetary policy expectations remain highly sensitive to oil volatility, with markets currently pricing in 42bp of tightening by year-end. The eurozone's terms of trade, driven by energy imports, are also near March lows.
