Dollar Strengthens Amid Iran Concerns and Higher Oil Prices
The US dollar is gaining strength against multiple currencies due to renewed concerns about Iran and higher oil prices. The price of oil has increased, which is causing inflation worries and a surge in bond yields.
According to market data, the probability of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve (Fed) in September stands at 68%. This expectation is driven by hawkish policy messaging from Fed officials, including Warsh. The uncertainty surrounding inflation and an energy shock have also contributed to this sentiment.
The dollar's safe-haven demand is increasing due to the escalating tensions between the US and Iran. Inflation data from the Eurozone has also shown core inflation at 2.4%, while headline inflation was 3.3% with energy inflation at 14.3%. This has led to expectations of an ECB rate hike.
The Bank of England (BoE) is also dealing with higher inflation, but new concerns have arisen regarding the increased use of its long-term repo facility. The dollar should benefit from a combination of an upward shift in Fed hike expectations and safe-haven flows, while the euro should benefit from an ECB rate hike.
