Dollar Strengthens Amid Weak Japanese Economy

The US dollar is expected to remain strong in the coming months before weakening later this year, according to a Reuters poll of FX strategists. Nearly 95% of respondents said Japanese currency interventions alone would not sustainably curb the yen's weakness, with many citing the need for interest rate hikes by the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to make a lasting impact.

The BOJ has been reluctant to raise borrowing costs due to economic concerns, but interest rate futures now show another rate rise in October. This could lead to a further strengthening of the dollar, which has already risen 2% this year.

Despite recent Japanese interventions, the yen remains weak against the dollar, with a median forecast suggesting it will weaken further over the next three months before gaining slightly in six and 12 months. Long-dollar positions are expected to remain stable or decrease, with some strategists warning that the yen's recovery would require more than just intervention.

Analysts point out that the yen is currently trading at a discount due to its weak economy and low interest rates, making it an attractive target for investors seeking higher returns. However, a lasting recovery would also depend on factors such as lower energy prices or a broader slowdown encouraging Japanese investors to repatriate capital.
