Dollar Strengthens as ECB Rate Hike Looms Amid Middle East Tensions
The US dollar is experiencing increased demand ahead of the European Central Bank's (ECB) interest rate hike, which is expected to happen on Thursday. Markets are pricing in a 100% chance of the ECB raising its key interest rate by at least 25 basis points.
However, uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran conflict and its impact on the energy market may affect the Fed's decision to cap long-term US interest rates. The US is also seeing a record $200 billion in investment-grade corporate issuance this month, which could further complicate the situation.
Treasury Secretary Bessent claims that she has asymmetrical information about the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) plans, but the market has already discounted a 25 basis point hike by next week. The Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 0.4% in August, which is in line with expectations and puts PPI at 5.4% on an annual basis.
