Dollar Surges as Fed Hawkishness Reignites Rate Hike Bets

The US dollar has strengthened to its highest level in two weeks, driven by hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh. This has increased bets on a rate hike in September, with the implied probability rising to 57%. The yen, meanwhile, has slipped below 160 per dollar, sparking concerns about official intervention.

Warsh's remarks on Friday were seen as a clear indication that further tightening may be needed to curb inflation. He stated that policymakers will 'have work to do' if they don't get the confidence that inflation is heading down to 2%. This has fuelled expectations of a rate hike, with yields on two-year US Treasury notes rising to over one-month highs.

Market analysts believe that Warsh's defense of the inflation target has reduced pressure on the dollar and shifted focus back to economic fundamentals. However, some remain cautious about the yen's prospects, citing concerns about the wide rate gap between Japan and other major economies.
