Dollar Surges as US Data Fuels Rate Hike Expectations
The US dollar strengthened on Wednesday after a batch of economic data from the Commerce Department showed a slight increase in expectations for a rate hike by the Federal Reserve. The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index rose 3.7% in the 12 months through July, matching the previous month's reading and surpassing economists' estimates of 3.6%. On a monthly basis, PCE increased 0.2%, exceeding the predicted 0.1% gain.
The data was released ahead of the Jackson Hole symposium, an annual gathering of central bankers, which is expected to provide insight into the Fed's future monetary policy decisions. The slight uptick in rate hike expectations may indicate that the Fed is preparing for a more aggressive stance on interest rates.
