Dollar Takes Hit as US Retail Sales Slump and Yen Strengthens
The US dollar took a hit on Friday following a surprise decline in US retail sales for July. The data, which was released on Friday, showed a 0.6% drop in retail sales, contrasting with modest gains in the prior month.
Juan Perez from Monex USA pointed out that this unexpected downturn is evidence of an economic slowdown in the US, which may weaken the case for a rate hike by the Federal Reserve in September.
The yen's performance has also been bolstered by speculation around the Bank of Japan's potential rate adjustments, bringing new dynamics to currency markets and placing the yen on a volatile path.
