Dollar Ticks Higher as Markets Await Pivotal Inflation Data
The US dollar experienced a slight increase on Wednesday ahead of crucial inflation data releases and key events in Jackson Hole.
Investors are eagerly awaiting the release of July's personal consumption expenditures (PCE) data, which is closely watched by the Federal Reserve. PCE is the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, and economists expect core PCE to have risen 3.3% from a year earlier, unchanged from June.
The Australian dollar saw significant gains, reaching $0.71865, its highest level in three months, after data showed the trimmed mean CPI gauge rose at an annual rate of 3.6%. This has led analysts to speculate that the Reserve Bank of Australia may deliver another rate hike over the coming months.
Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's decision to intervene in the market has added complexity to the situation, although analysts do not expect a detailed explanation from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's keynote speech at Jackson Hole.
