Dollar Tumbles as Treasury Efforts Unintendedly Weaken Currency
The US dollar fell to near a three-month low against the euro as investors weighed in on the US Treasury's efforts to stabilize government debt yields. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to increase repurchases of longer-dated Treasuries, which has had an unintended consequence: undermining the value of the dollar.
The 30-year yield jumped this week to its highest level since 2007, driven by concerns over the US fiscal outlook, heavy government issuance, geopolitical risk from the war with Iran, and uncertainty about the Federal Reserve's policy path. Analysts say that suppressing yields has simply shifted the burden of fiscal concerns onto the currency.
The dollar index fell 0.05% to 98.79, while the euro rose 0.03% to $1.1682. Bitcoin continued its surge, up 6.06% at $77,060, as investors seek alternatives to fiat currencies. The next test of Treasury yields may come next Friday when Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh delivers a speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium.
