Dollar Weakens as Investors Shift Focus Back to Inflation Concerns
The US Dollar (USD) has resumed its downward trend after initially gaining ground. The US Dollar Index (DXY) came close to reaching its psychological barrier of 100.00 but saw its gains fade away as market speculation turned back to the Bank of Japan's potential policy rate hike.
The US labor market, while robust and stable, does not seem to be a priority for the Federal Reserve. In fact, comments from Chair Kevin Warsh and most FOMC members highlight the importance of bringing inflation towards the Fed's 2% target as their primary focus.
Fed rate setters delivered mixed messages on policy outlook, with some warning that rates may need to rise if inflation fails to moderate. Michael Barr stated that persistent price pressures create risks, while John Williams pointed to encouraging disinflation and supported waiting for more data before the next meeting.
