Dollar-Yen Stagnation Continues as Yen Remains Above Pre-Intervention Low

The US dollar and Japanese yen have reached a holding pattern, with the dollar trading little changed against the yen. The yen remains above its pre-intervention low of 151.94, which was reached in October 2022 and triggered intervention by Japanese authorities.

The interest rate differential between the US and Japan remains wide, putting downward pressure on the yen. However, expectations that the Bank of Japan may soon adjust its ultra-loose monetary policy have supported the yen's recent recovery.

Japan's Ministry of Finance has historically intervened in the currency market to counter excessive volatility, particularly when the yen weakens rapidly. In 2022, the government spent over $60 billion to support the yen, marking its first intervention since 1998.
