Dollar-Yen to Trade in Narrow Range as U.S. Inflation Data Takes Center Stage
The dollar-yen pair will be closely watched next week as it seeks direction in the 155-159 range. The U.S. August Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) data will take center stage, with market participants eager to see if they reignite Federal Reserve rate hike expectations.
On the Japanese side, revised April-June GDP figures and wage statistics could strengthen Bank of Japan additional rate hike expectations and heighten yen-buying pressure. BOJ board member Hajime Takata's recent comments on consecutive rate hikes have already accelerated this trend.
Naoto Ono of Gaitame.com Research Institute notes that if U.S. inflation data exceeds market expectations, it could lead to a rebound in the dollar-yen pair as investors buy back dollars and long-term yields rise. Conversely, weak inflation data could intensify dollar selling and warrant caution.
The August Japan Corporate Goods Price Index will also be released next week, and its impact on yen strength cannot be underestimated. A widening yield curve spread, driven by rising long-term yields, could trigger a return to yen selling due to concerns about aggressive fiscal policy.
