Dollar's Global Dominance to Wane Slowly Amid Rising Competition
Despite its current dominance in international finance, the US dollar's global influence is likely to wane slowly over time rather than suddenly.
The dollar remains involved in nearly 90% of all foreign exchange transactions today, and while there have been rising challenges to its status, no single currency currently has the infrastructure to replace it as a primary reserve currency.
Economist Barry Eichengreen notes that past dominant currencies maintained their influence long after the economic peak of their issuing nations due to structural advantages such as deep liquidity and trust in the central bank's independence.
Any potential alternative to the dollar would face significant institutional barriers, including a fragmented bond market for the euro and strict capital controls holding back China's renminbi.
