Dow Crashes 471 Points as Middle East Tensions Fuel Oil Price Surge
The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted by 471 points on Tuesday as investors grappled with renewed hostilities in the Middle East and their potential impact on energy prices. The S&P 500 fell 0.16% while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.09%. Oil prices surged, with Brent crude futures rising to $98.59 a barrel, their highest level since July 24.
The developments have added to concerns about inflation and the Federal Reserve's policy outlook. Markets are currently pricing in a 58.4% probability of a rate hike at the September meeting, according to the CME FedWatch tool. The Producer Price Index is set to be released on Thursday, followed by the Consumer Price Index on Friday.
Energy stocks benefited from the rise in oil prices, with Marathon Petroleum and Occidental Petroleum gaining in trading. However, higher energy costs could create additional inflationary pressure, complicating the Federal Reserve's policy decision.
