Dow Eyes Cautious Opening near 53,800 Amid Inflation and Weaker Consumer Spending

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished August 14 at 53,732.41, down 107.58 points or 0.20%. Despite the decline, the major indexes remain significantly higher for the year, with the Dow up about 11.8% year to date.

Inflation remains a key factor in the Dow Jones outlook, influencing expectations for Federal Reserve policy. The latest U.S. Consumer Price Index showed annual inflation eased to 3.4% in July from 3.5% in June, while core inflation slowed to 2.5%. This has helped shape expectations around the Fed's next policy decisions.

Weaker consumer spending data is also a concern, with US retail sales falling 0.6% in July, marking the largest monthly decline since May 2025. Sales remained 5% higher than a year earlier, but the decline prompted some economists to lower their expectations for third-quarter economic growth.

The Dow Jones futures prediction points to a cautious opening near 53,800 on Monday, based on late-Friday futures levels. The Dow's close at 53,732.41 leaves 54,000 as an important upside hurdle, while 53,500 could act as a key downside level.
