Dow Falls as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Weigh on Oil Prices
Wall Street closed lower on Tuesday as concerns over the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on oil prices weighed heavily on investor sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by about 188 points, or 0.35%, to close at 53,787.57. This decline was driven in part by renewed uncertainty over negotiations between the US and Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial oil shipping route, and tensions surrounding its closure have pushed up energy prices. WTI crude settled 1.6% higher at $83.48 per barrel, while Brent crude rose about 1.6% to $89.2 per barrel. Higher oil prices have raised concerns over inflation, making it more challenging for the Federal Reserve to balance slowing economic growth with persistent price pressures.
Weakness in major technology stocks also contributed to the decline, with shares of Alphabet, Apple, and Amazon all trading lower. The S&P 500 energy sector was one of the few bright spots, as higher oil prices lifted it by about 1.6%. However, the broader market remains cautious ahead of Wednesday's consumer price index (CPI) report and Thursday's producer price index (PPI), which could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve's next policy move.
