Dow Rebounds on Fragile Ground Amid Rising Yields and Oil Prices
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounded on Friday, August 21, after suffering a sharp sell-off in the previous session. The index rose 0.68%, or 361.71 points, to 53,119.88 in morning trading.
Financial stocks provided significant support to Wall Street, with JPMorgan Chase shares increasing by 1.2% and Goldman Sachs gaining 2.3%. The S&P 500 banks index also advanced 1.1%.
Several technology and growth stocks moved higher, including Meta and Tesla, which both gained more than 1%. Cryptocurrency-linked stocks posted particularly strong gains as Bitcoin climbed to its highest level since late May. Robinhood rose by 12.4%, Coinbase gained 9.5%, and Strategy advanced 7.4%.
The recovery was fragile, with investors remaining cautious due to elevated Treasury yields, oil prices, inflation risks, and the Federal Reserve's interest-rate outlook. The increase in oil prices added to inflation concerns, particularly amid continued uncertainty surrounding the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz.
