Dutch Central Bank Diversifies Gold Reserves Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty
The National Bank of the Netherlands (DNB) has made significant changes to its gold reserves in response to growing geopolitical instability. Between March and August, the DNB transferred 86 tons of gold from its locations in New York and Ottawa to the Bank of England in London.
This move brings the total amount of gold stored in London to 32.1% of the bank's total reserves, up from 18.1%. The remaining 18.5% will continue to be held in North America, with the rest stored in Zeist, a Dutch city.
The governor of the DNB, Olaf Sleijpen, stated that the relocation aims to improve the tradability and liquidity of the bank's gold reserves, making them more easily accessible in case of crisis. He emphasized that the goal is not to use these reserves, but rather to strengthen the bank's preparedness capacity.
