Dutch Central Bank Moves 86 Metric Tons of Gold from North America to London
The Dutch central bank (DNB) has moved a significant portion of its gold reserves from North America to London, citing rising geopolitical tensions as the reason for this decision. Over the past six months, approximately 86 metric tons of gold were transferred from New York and Ottawa to the Bank of England.
This move accounts for 27.5% of the DNB's previous gold holdings in North America and brings its total gold reserves held in London to 32%. The bank stated that it is strengthening its crisis preparedness by holding gold at the Bank of England, which is considered the world's most easily tradable gold.
DNB President Olaf Sleijpen emphasized the importance of resilience and preparedness, stating that 'we do not expect to use our reserves' but are taking proactive measures to be better equipped for potential crises. The move reflects a growing trend among central banks to prioritize resilience, operational readiness, and diversification of reserve holdings.
