Dutch Central Bank Moves Gold from US Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The Dutch National Bank (DNB) has transferred 86 tonnes of its gold holdings from New York and Ottawa to London, citing increasing geopolitical unrest. This move follows a similar decision by France, which removed all its gold from the US Federal Reserve in 2025-26.
The DNB's statement emphasized that gold held with the Bank of England is considered 'the world's most easily tradable gold and will therefore be the most readily available for DNB in a crisis situation.'
This decision reflects growing concerns about the stability of the US financial system, particularly under President Trump. The Taxpayers Association of Europe has urged central banks to reconsider their gold holdings in New York, citing fears that the US government might seize them.
Central banks are increasingly turning to gold as a safe-haven asset amid rising geopolitical tensions and eroding confidence in US financial assets. In June, the European Central Bank reported a significant jump in the proportion of gold in central bank reserves, now at 27%.
