Dutch Central Bank Shifts Gold Holdings Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions
The Dutch central bank (DNB) has shifted 86 metric tonnes of gold from North America to London over the past six months. This move is aimed at enhancing crisis preparedness in light of increasing geopolitical tensions.
The transfer represents 27.5% of DNB's previously held gold reserves in New York and Ottawa, which were moved to the Bank of England. The Netherlands now holds 32% of its gold in London, with almost 31% domestically and 37% split between North America.
DNB President Olaf Sleijpen emphasized the need for 'strengthening our resilience and preparedness', although the central bank does not expect to use its reserves. The move reflects a growing focus among central banks on operational readiness, diversification of reserve holdings, and mitigating geopolitical risks.
