Dutch Central Bank Transfers Billions in Gold to London Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The Dutch central bank (DNB) has transferred billions of dollars in gold to London as part of its 'crisis preparedness' strategy. The move is aimed at strengthening the country's resilience and preparedness, according to Bank president Olaf Sleijpen. He emphasized that the decision was necessary to ensure that the DNB can easily trade gold in a crisis situation.
The transfer involved 86 tonnes of gold being removed from North America and relocated to London over several months. The operation included moving 27 tonnes of gold bars from New York and Ottawa to Zeist in the Netherlands, before shipping a similar quantity to London without needing to melt them down.
The decision comes amid an ongoing trade dispute between the US and Canada, with both countries imposing fresh tariffs on each other's goods. The move is also seen as a response to geopolitical unrest, particularly in the US economy due to its ongoing war with Iran, which has impacted global trade.
